Algal Bloom

Population explosion of certain types of algae in surface waters. Algal blooms are usually caused by an increase in nutrients (e.g., nitrates and phosphates) brought about by fertilizer run-off, improperly treated wastewater entering surface waters or other causes. Algal blooms can deplete the oxygen in water, causing the death of fish and other aquatic life. <
