Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
The concentration of oxygen (normally a gas) dissolved in water. This concentration is a function of temperature and pressure. (For example, the colder the water, the more oxygen it will hold). In wastewater treatment, the amount of dissolved oxygen in wastewater may be insufficient to support the bacteria that use oxygen to decompose organic matter. Therefore, aerobic wastewater treatment systems frequently require the addition of oxygen, usually via an aerator or other mechanical means. The measure of dissolved oxygen is a common test performed by Qualified Service Providers in monitoring of advanced treatment units. <
