Grease Trap
An in-ground chamber similar to a septic tank, or an undersink packaged unit, usually used at food preparation facilities, designed to trap grease from kitchen wastewater before it reaches the OWTS. A grease trap is necessary to prevent grease and other fatty substances from entering into the OWTS where they can cause fouling and system failure. Good management practices can greatly reduce the cleaning frequency of a grease trap. Grease trap cleaning should always be done by a licensed pumper. Grease traps are unusual to find in residential OWTS. <
