Septic System
New term, Onsite Wastewater Treatment system, OWTS. A system for treating wastewater from an individual home or business, or a group of homes or businesses that relies on natural anaerobic and aerobic bacterial decomposition processes to treat wastewater and return it to the environment. A conventional OWTS consists of a gravity-fed septic tank designed to separate solid matter from liquid effluent, and a gravity-fed drainfield whose soils absorb and further treat effluent. Properly designed and maintained, a OWTS can effectively and naturally treat wastewater for 20-30 years.<
